Whitecaps end winless streak by beating FC Dallas
The Whitecaps ended a three-match winless streak with a 2-1 victory against slumping FC Dallas on Saturday in Vancouver.
Defender Ali Adnan put Vancouver ahead in the 30th minute and Lucas Venuto made it 2-0 in the 40th for the Whitecaps (4-6-5, 17 points), who had a loss and two draws in their previous three matches.
Dominique Badji drew Dallas (5-6-3, 18 points) to within 2-1 in the 85th minute to complete a wild sequence. FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez came out 40 yards as Venuto dribbled around him, but Venuto’s touch sent the ball to the right corner.
Venuto recovered and tried to score into an open net only to have the attempt blocked by John Nelson. Dallas went on the counter and Badji scored his second goal.
Dallas is winless in the past six games (0-4-2).
Adnan gave Vancouver the 1-0 lead with his first MLS goal in his 12th match. He slipped through defenders Reggie Cannon and Ryan Hollingshead deep on the left side to get free. From there he dribbled into the box and powered a shot past Gonzalez.
The Whitecaps doubled the advantage on Fredy Montero’s heel pass in the center of the box to Venuto, who placed a shot to the far right corner from 15 yards for his second score.
Vancouver played for the fifth time in 15 days and were without forward Joaquín Ardaiz, the lone striker, Wednesday in a 2-2 draw at the New York Red Bulls because of a hamstring injury.
The depleted Dallas lineup already was missing starting midfielders Paxton Pomykal and Edwin Cerrillo, who are with the U.S. team for the U-20 World Cup. Added to the absences were center backs Matt Hedges because of a red-card suspension and defender Reto Ziegler (groin).
The Whitecaps remain home to meet Toronto FC on Friday. Dallas hosts the Seattle Sounders on June 1.
