Tottenham will extend contract with Alderweireld until 2020
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino confirmed that his club would take advantage of its option of automatic extension of the contract with defender Toby Alderweireld.
It finally became clear last season about the fact that Alderweireld would not sign a new contract. According to rumors, Toby even landed in disgrace with Pochettino because of that and couldn’t return to the starting line-up after his injury for a long time.
Tottenham didn’t manage to sell the Belgium national team player at a reasonable price last summer. Alderweireld remained in North London, but at the same time he returned to the starting squad and began to show his best football again.
Meanwhile, only half a year remains till the end of the defender’s current agreement. In order to save themselves from speculation in January and not to lose the player without any compensation at the end of the season, the Spurs decided to activate the option to extend cooperation with Toby for 12 months – until June of 2020.
This also means that Alderweireld, 29, will be available for purchase at the fixed price of £25 million in the final two weeks of the next summer transfer window.
