Match preview: Bayern Munich vs Schalke 04

In the German Cup match with Hertha, Bayern gave a lot of reasons to talk about the holes in their defense. Because of those mistakes, the team needed extra time to snatch a ticket to the next round.

And the same mistakes lowered the Bavarians to third place in the Bundesliga standings – for the first time since the 2011/12 season. Then Bayern were also third after Dortmund and Gladbach. In that season, the Reds played with Schalke in the 22nd round – and won 2-0, but still lost the title race to Borussia Dortmund.

In order to stabilize the team’s game, Kovac needs only to remove incomprehensible decisions connected with defense. The coach will have to do this without Manuel Neuer, who is not yet clear when will start to work. Ribery has recovered, but Robben returned to the infirmary again.

Schalke 04 managed to score only 22 points in 20 matches. On the one hand, the threat of relegation is not as high as before. But the team is in a precarious position, so it cannot afford many mistakes. An easy victory over Fortuna Düsseldorf in the German Cup should give them confidence.

If Bayern are motivated, then today’s three points should remain in Munich. Schalke get lost in matches with strong rivals. Of course, the Bavarians’ unstable defense leaves Tedesco’s team a chance to counterattack, but this strategy is unlikely to bring the maximum possible result.
