Los Angeles FC striker Carlos Vela was voted by fans on Twitter as captain of the MLS All-Star team for Wednesday’s clash with Spain’s Atletico Madrid in Orlando.

Vela leads MLS with 21 goals and ranks second with 12 assists in just 20 appearances. He is on pace to break the league scoring record of 31 set by Atlanta United’s Josef Martinez in 2018.

The other candidates for the All-Star armband were D.C. United’s Wayne Rooney, Orlando City’s Nani and the San Jose Earthquakes’ Chris Wondolowski.

Not nominated was Los Angeles Galaxy striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was given a formal warning by MLS on Tuesday for an elbow that left LAFC’s Mohamed El-Munir with a facial fracture.

Vela, 30, also served as the All-Star captain last summer when the MLS team lost to Italy’s Juventus on penalty kicks.
