Fletcher: United need their Van Dijk

Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher believes that the Red Devils need a clear leader in the defensive line – like Virgil Van Dijk at Liverpool.

Manchester United head coach Jose Mourinho tirelessly shuffles the defensive line in this season and hasn’t yet decided on a pair of main central defenders.

In the Champions League match against Valencia, Mourinho trusted Eric Bailly from the first minutes for the first time in recent months. Eric made a pair with Phil Jones, who eventually became the culprit of both goals conceded and the 2:1 defeat as a result. After the fiasco of his former teammate, Fletcher identified United’s main problem.

Darren says that he has no doubts about the fact that United’s defenders are top-class players. Nevertheless, they lack a leader who could lead them.

They need a top defender like Van Dijk, who has accelerated the progress of other Liverpool’s defenders. There are questions to the team’s defensive line when Virgil isn’t on the field. Only a top player can make such a difference.
