De Ligt broke Fabregas record and became the youngest captain in the UCL playoffs

Ajax and Real Madrid met in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 (1:2).

19-year-old defender Matthijs de Ligt was the captain of the Amsterdam club in that meeting.

Thus, the Dutch football player became the youngest captain in the history of the Champions League playoffs.

Previously, the record belonged to midfielder Cesc Fabregas. At 21, thr Spaniard with a captain’s armband brought Arsenal to the Champions League match with Villarreal (1:1) in London on April 7, 2009.

The return match between Real and Ajax will take place at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on March 5.
