Manchester City’s chances to acquire Matthijs de Ligt sharply increased after it became known that Barcelona wouldn’t fight for Ajax’s 19-year-old captain.

Recall that Barcelona agreed on Ajax midfielder Frenkie De Jong’s acquisition for £75 million last month. The player will join the club from Camp Nou in the coming summer.

It was expected previously that the Catalan club would try to buy de Ligt as well. However, the young defender’s transfer would cost Barcelona the same money, and maybe even more.

In addition, Barcelona are scheduled to buy an attacker who could replace Luis Suarez in the coming summer. At Camp Nou, having weighed their financial resources, they decided to leave the fight for De Ligt, according to the Daily Mail.

This Barcelona’s decision will please the Citizens, who see a successor for their captain Vincent Kompany in De Ligt. However, City may still face tough competition from other clubs, such as Manchester United, Juventus and Bayern Munich.
